Moka Only needs no introduction. He is one of Canada's most loved and credible artist in the underground Hip Hop scene. Moka Only was born Daniel Denton in November 14, 1973. He grew up in Langford, BC and started freestyling in house parties. He has collaborated with Perfect Strangers, Swollen Members, Code Name Scorpion, Cryptic Souls Crew, The Dominant Mammals, City Planners, Nowfolk, Jay Dilla, Aceyalone, Oh No and much more. Moka Only won three consecutive Juno Awards (Canadian Grammys) as a part of the multi-platinum Swollen Members. He started his solo career in 1994 and released more than 15 albums independently. Moka also goes under many different aliases such as Ron Contour, TJ Slim, Mr. Behaviour, Torch, Him Himself and The Durable Mammal. His career has spanned for more than a decade and a half. He is a well-respected public figure amongst his fans.

I had preconceived ideas of who he was or how he is. The first thing I admired about him is the way he connects with his fans. I have read that he likes to go to the train tracks and watch the trains. He also loves to collect vintage keyboards. I asked him why he likes trains and if it had something to do with the movie Trainspotting. He casually replied "I like trains just because I like trains.. same reason anybody likes anything.. some people like cars or boats or burgers.. ya know." Silly me. My two-year old likes trains too and I doubt she's ever seen the movie Trainspotting. Moka Only seems to be a pretty down-to-earth guy who spends his time creating real music about real people. He stays true to himself and his craft. He spends afternoons at the beach, maybe a Sunday at the flea market with his best friends looking for old records or vintage keyboards. He is definitely a night owl as he works through the wee hours of the morning. He told me that is his creative time.
